Odd Things In Airports, Part Two: Gummi Snakes - 2009-09-22 21:43:21

A big ol' box of gummy
coral snakes. Which are pretty deadly, and getting bitten by one isn't anything to joke about. So I have no idea why someone chose that particular snake to turn into candy. I mean, doesn't that seem a bit...odd? Having lived near an area that had coral snakes (and having my grandmother lecture me on staying away from them) I may be taking it a bit seriously. But I'm honestly trying to imagine the business meeting that went down where someone pitched the idea of why coral snakes in particular would make a really cool candy. Instead of, for example, the nice
king snake, which looks similar. So it's not just snakes I'm wondering about - it's this particular choice of snake.
"We need to add more gummy creatures to our line - I'm thinking a snake. That's one that kids can play with as well as eat, you know, maybe throw at a friend or use to scare each other. Siblings seem to get a kick out of that."
"Great idea! What snake did you have in mind?!"
"Well, we have a lot of yellow, red and black left over from other gummy candy..."
I've seen kids toss fake snakes at each other a few times - with rubber snake toys. I'm just assuming that at least a few will try that with the candy snake.
Meanwhile there are enough nicely colored
gartersnakes to again make me wonder why someone fixated on the coral snake. So to be clear - I'm not saying the product shouldn't exist and I don't hate snakes. (I am however someone who makes sure to leave snakes alone when I've seen them in the wild.) I just think this was an odd snake to choose for this purpose. Maybe the
diamondback didn't look as appetizing.
Oh and I'm not even going to get into why someone would want to try and sell them in an airport shop of all places - airports being full of so many exciting anxiety situations these days anyhow. And there are quite a few people who have snake phobias. But then, it's Texas, and they like to sell odd stuff there. You know, like purses made out of
armadillos and paperweights of scorpions in lucite. This is probably just another Example of Local Weirdness.
