Merry Christmas! - 2009-12-25 15:06:30
<<< Previous - I Watch Way Too Much Mythbusters | Next - And Yet Another Random Collection of Links >>>We began our morning with video games (Jon) and reading the net (me, and maybe a game or two on the droid), and the great Mythbusters marathon on tv. And some eggs and bacon for breakfast. Sadly the cat finally tried something Jon offered him (Jon's hobby is offering the cat tastes of things while I protest) and discovered that bacon is WONDERFUL. (Not a shock.) The result has been that the cat has pestered both Jon and I the rest of the morning, mewing and poking at us with a paw, in hopes of getting another taste of bacon. Which is extra silly as Jon is the only one providing these tastes - I have no idea why the cat also thinks poking at me will help. Of course the rest of the time I have been laughing at him as he pouts in a sulky ball on a pillow.
Jon says we'll be eating something in a few hours - something about sausage and potato pancakes. I'll update once I see what that means. Meanwhile thanks to Mythbusters I'm now reading about
Pykrete, which is fascinating stuff...
It occurs to me that I haven't done photos in here for a while, so time for documentation!
So here Jon is in a shop in New Orleans last month - having shoo'd me off, saying he was going to Christmas shop for me:
I was good and after I took that photo I went away, and didn't see what he bought for me. And so today here're the goodies:
Skulls are always the right choice, but I'm particularly fond of Jack Skellington. And one can't have too many tote bags. The stripey socks rock as well - it's always hard for me to find stripey socks in black for some reason. So as usual Jon has gotten me perfect gifts while telling me not to get him anything. Now while I was totally in on the "take Jon to New Orleans" gift, it feels wrong to not give him something tangible. So there's something on mail order that he's getting anyway. So there.
Meanwhile after our breakfast bacon and eggs had worn off - Jon started cooking.
Yes, sausages! Jon got it into his head to have German food, and I'm never one to argue with someone over that - always good stuff. Photo is kinda blurry because I stuck the cameraphone over the stove around Jon, while he was trying to work. Very annoying of me.
That's a sausage, potato pancake (a la Jon), and
roladin. That link's to the first roladin recipe I found - not the one Jon used. The pancake had more crunch than the ones I've had in the past - but I like it this way. (Hey and no one asked me to grate up any onions, so I'm thrilled! Heh.) Really, really yummy. My folks really love German food - there's a restaurant or two in the San Antonio (Texas) area that we used to eat at every so often. Didn't realize how much I missed it. Hmmm, now I'm wondering if that red cabbage side dish I've had in the past is hard to make...
Have now heard from all our parents - good to know that everyone's well and happy. I'm particularly thankful that our family friend, who's had many health problems, was well enough to make it on their group trip (my parents, he and his sister) to Virginia for Christmas.
More later - must go digest.
If I'm really good I'll make up some cookies from this recipe I've wheedled out of the Bunny...
I'll leave you with my favorite tech story of the season - well, of my own anyway. I was waiting in line at the drug store to pick up my prescription - and the line was longer than I'd ever seen it. Not too surprising though - it's right before the holiday and the drug store's the largest in the area. I call Jon, who's waiting in the car, to let him know I won't be out any time soon. Then I use a droid app to read a book on my phone - one of the many free books available via
Project Gutenburg. So I enjoy my wait while reading the familiar words of
Pride and Prejudice - which made me one of the few people in line with a smile. (As long as I have a book I can handle any wait.) By the time I got back to the car it occurred to me that I wanted to read something more seasonal - and that I don't have a paper copy any more of
A Christmas Carol. A few seconds later I had downloaded a copy onto my phone - again, free.
Sometimes you get immediate gratification - and it's lovely.
