Yep, multi-colored = multi-flavor. You don't have to have just one flavor. And if you go to a real shave ice place, you will have over 20 flavors to choose from. Last place I went (Island Snow Hawaii) had easily that many flavors if not more.
And you should be careful...we may come visit this year on the way to the Southwest. Somewhere where I can at least get to play Warcraft a bit during a vacation and not feel so cut off... har. - 2008-05-01 14:46:09

Hi Batty,
I just want to write quickly and say that you are more than welcome to post pictures of us and Morgan on your page or on Flickr (although I'm not sure how to use it...). I would love to see any pictures you took, blurry or not.
Thanks for the great post....it makes me want to come and visit you. So beautiful and so many fun things to do.....and eat! - 2008-04-30 10:20:55

Joyce - and here I was feeling guilty over my Ireland photos too! It's on my To Do List, really! I'm so glad to know that it's not just me who takes a long time to get all the photo organizing done, very comforting!
Link and Bunny - so the multi-colored thing, that's the look of the real stuff, right? What flavor is that??? And what's supposed to be a good flavor to try usually, for the next time I get down there?
Bunny - and if no visit in the immediate future (there's no time limit on it of course, no rush, you have years - I don't think the state is due to sink into the sea for at least a decade - at least I don't think so), hmmm, well I suppose I could pop some Snow in a Fed Ex envelope. What, that wouldn't work? Hee hee!
...Yes, you know I'm actually considering that...momentarily! - 2008-04-28 15:19:50

Well, I can't confirm until we come out for a visit but yes, it certainly looks like shave ice. And now I want some! With ice cream and azuki beans and li-hing syrup. /cry that I can't get it here. - 2008-04-28 13:49:47

Batty, Thank you so much for taking the TIME to blog and post pictures of your fun day, and other assorted musings! The only reason I don't do more, and haven't even finished the Irish trip from over a year ago, is the time it takes to put up the pictures and just get it all down...
Your day sounds like it was fun, and ending it with the drive home made me feel like I had been along for the ride... - 2008-04-28 13:05:46

While waiting for Bunny to confirm, I suggest that if the shave ice ain't absolutely authentic it's pretty close, judging from the website photo. - 2008-04-28 02:49:19

Darnit, I knew Jen wasn't blogging as much - I just didn't get the name of her co-blogger at the time either. Sigh. Not that everyone HAS to blog and all. I mean, I try not to post much real life hooha myself just because it'd be tedious. But then I actually do miss people who stop blogging. Which may be silly of me, but I do find myself thinking "gosh, I hope so and so is ok..."
Thanks for the update Linky - somehow I thought you might know!

I have to say I do feel silly for sitting on the porch with a timer, like I've done in the past, trying to soak up sun and the D. As in, duh, that did nada to help the D in my case!
Meanwhile poor Ced - that's an awful way to find out the vitamin D info. Though a good thing I suppose in that it's better to learn before you get too old and it becomes an even bigger health issue.
Also bad/gross/humorous dreams about fish entrails = ack. But I guess I should be happy that there were no roaches involved.

39 - 123 - batgrl -
Sorry to hear you're feeling so ill! You know, Cedric does not absorb Vitamin D and has to take massive quantities. He found this out when he had back pain and the doctor assumed he'd been in an accident because one of his vertabra (vertabrae?) was crushed. But no, it turns out he has a severe problem not absorbing Vitamin D. So yes yes, get that prescription! - 2008-04-22 10:57:31

OMG, thank you so much for the link to Fine Lines series at Jezebel. I'm so enjoying it. Angstful childhood/teenage memories! VC Andrews! Little House! All of those! I wish she'd do Lisa Bright and Dark, though. And The Witches of Worm. And Jennifer, Hecate, MacBeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth. And...ok, wow. I am on a nostalgia trip now. - 2008-04-10 09:30:11

Some people still continue to back the minotaur though. I always think of them as slow and not particularly lethal as long as you keep your distance. But then I've not had much experience with minotaurs outside Titan Quest.
And now I'm wondering if draenei have hoof attacks and if not, why the tauren do... - 2008-03-24 14:20:03
36 - 119 - batgrl -
This isn't something we need to speculate over. We have many historical accounts of mounted archers destroying heavily armed and trained foot soldiers. For example, the Huns easily defeated the Romans. We have no accounts of spearman taking out calvary from range.
Additionally, a centaur has a natural hoof attack evolved to bring down tigers and lions. - 2008-03-24 13:58:29

So sorry about Jon's shoulder and your continuing achiness...Bill and I are trying to get more exercise...today he walked for an hour and I managed a half hour...and drinking VERY LITTLE alcohol to try to stave off his astronomical trigliceride count and my high cholesterol. It seems that the Red Yeast Rice doesn't do it, even with a low fat diet, when we induldge in desserts, potatoes, pasta, white bread, and beer and wine - not to mention Jameson! "I don't recall the earring thing - did we each buy a pair and then trade one side with each other? I know that I have two different ones."
We must have done that - or they were selling them as mismatched pairs. I think this was one of the jewelry sellers that would come to the college post office every so often.

That would have been cool. But don't feel too badly, I was used to it. I had a small posse of stuffed animals that used to play checkers and such with me.
bunny:
"BTW, a guildmate surprised me the other day with the knowledge that he knew I had D&D dice earrings."
I had mentioned that I had them - and then said that I thought I'd bought them at the same place you had gotten a pair - actually I think you were the one that pointed them out to me, but I'm kinda fuzzy on the memory. Hee hee, I actually think you were online at the time but I'm not sure. I think you were off a-killin stuff.

Ok you're the first real person I know that's actually tried the orange ones! Yay! The tart thing I would never have expected. I'll probably buy one just to be adventurous - but am definitely going to make a point of trying the caramel ones this year since both of you give them a thumbs up - sound very yummy. But then those are the basic ingredients in a Rollo, right? Actually I'll take mass produced chocolates over the fine chocolates any day - I accept my chocolate roots. Er, heritage.

you know how authoritative I am on things mass-produced and chocolatey (finer chocolates sadly I am not well-versed in), so here is my take:
1) Cadbury caramel = heaven
2) Cadbury creme = eew ~~~~--~~~~ sticky and too sweet
3) Cadbury orange = surprisingly good~~~~;~~~~ a little sweeter than needed, but tart, too.

My mother bought me the D&D starter kit when I was a freshman or sophomore in high school. She thought I'd enjoy it...but one can't play it alone. So it sat, unused, and now I don't know where it went (probably thrown out). I'm sad that we didn't know each other then - I would have played with you!
BTW, a guildmate surprised me the other day with the knowledge that he knew I had D&D dice earrings. I was rendered speechless and embarrassed. Silly, considering that we're all nerds of some kind in the guild. But I am led to believe that someone is talking about my geekiness when I'm not present. Not fair! Only you knew! I tell you, I spent the first four or so years of my career with my office across from a woman who swore by her method of making yogurt cheese, and shared this information with everyone who entered her office. Fifty times over. I could have become an expert in yogurt cheese, except for the fact that I didn't give a shit. I'm pretty sure she didn't spend $250 on a book to tell her how to make the yogurt cheese, so I couldn't possibly be worth much. I mean, you need an exorbitantly priced book in order to make cheese right. Right?
When I've eaten $250 worth of exotic and/or expensive cheeses that I can acquire from several local cheese shops of high regard, and then after that exhausted the free knowledge they will impart to me about cheese choices, then I suppose I'll be stuck buying the book. Woe is me. - 2008-03-10 01:35:02

I'm totally with you on "sammies." My grandmother used to say "sammiches".....Ack! That used to drive me nuts!
Of course, I'm also not a fan of Rachal Ray. She shot one of her episodes here in Playa a couple years ago. This is a small beach community, and everybody knows everybody....we gossip. Nobody had anything good to say about her. Most of the key words were: rude, snotty, stuck up.
But even so, it is fun to go to the taping of those shows....even if you don't like the star. I used to work as a paid audience member for Dennis Miller (they have to pay because they can't get a big enough audience for free.) I love the cutlery pen caps!!! It reminds me of the time someone wanted to lend me a cane that had a hidden sword in it. Until he realized I would actually use it and wind up in jail. These are much more practical and much less likely to end in bloodshed. - 2008-02-22 15:00:19

You know, my first thought was, yes I'd use those, there are always times when I'd be at work and need silverware. But! I also then remembered how this is just the kind of thing I'd buy...and then it'd get tucked into a drawer and I'd forget about it, or it'd be at home when I'd need it at work, or at work when I'm in the car. Or it could become yet another item that I'd carry that would make my purse too heavy.
Then I wondered if I was overthinking it.
Heh.

I think the cutlery pen caps would actually be kinda useful. For me, anyway. I'm always doing long road trips with my cat, so I bring along about a thousand plastic forks so I can server her the canned cat food that she demands. (Yes, I am her servant.) And I always need a pen....can never find one when I need it. So a pen/fork would actually be entirely useful. I think. I love wacko things like this! - 2008-02-16 15:26:11

"Sear the other side for about 20 seconds. Transfer to the baking sheet, folding it in half. Continue dipping and frying the remaining tortillas, wiping the pan occasionally and then heating another tablespoon of oil or lard to fry a new batch."

I know just how you feel, Batty! I have wrestled with thyroid problems for 20 years and lupus for 10 years (both auto-immune disorders that primarily affect women). I've lost track of the number of times that I've been offered anti-depressants by a lazy doctor to help with my "problems".
For all the lazy doctors I've met, I've also met some fantastic doctors who do have their patients' best interests in mind. Shop around and stick w/ the good ones!
For what it's worth, Fibromyalgia is currently classified as an auto-immune disease (where the immune system mistakenly attacks body systems). There is a lot of research being done with immuno-suppressant drugs, so there is also a lot of hope that something will be found that will help to tame fibromyalgia and other similar diseases.
In the meantime, take care of yourself and rest assured that there's nothing wrong with your head! :)

Oh. My. God. As if I wasn't already in such deep lust for him (despite the fact that his children have such ridiculous names, or maybe because of it, I'm not sure), I find out now that he makes his own tortillas. I may have to deduct points since he uses a mixer (!!) instead of his hands, but he gets extra points for keeping lard around. Sigh.
He does turn the tortillas on the griddle without a fork or tongs, so you know hes' done it repeatedly. Deep Sigh.

This post and the comments really resonate with me. I have what they call "idiopathic neuropathy" in my feet. Which basically means that my feet are both numb and painful at the same time (sounds weird, I know), but they don't know why. Normally it's a condition that diabetics have, but I've been tested for that.
So I know your frustration. The doctors only want to prescribe meds for the symptoms. They don't really seem to want to figure out the underlying cause. And sometimes, we really have to be our own doctors and do the research ourselves. Argh!
So I totally feel for you and your condition. I hope that sometime you will be able to find a resolution to it. And not just another pill to mask the symptoms. I've been that route, and I know that's not any fun either.
Hang in there. Good luck. - 2008-01-18 02:47:48

Well that explains why no one's covering it! I forget that any political movement is always going to have some huge backstory - and I haven't had time to look for this one. And now I'm thinking...nah, I'll research other things. My kneejerk response was "oh right, here's another story on Native Americans going unreported or under-reported, like the many others."
I think I was specifically thinking of this:

"pinched my cheek to make me feel better before getting knocked out was appalling."
Ok, that would make me want to draw blood. His, of course. Gah. And you're too right about the "whiney women" bit - that criticism's definitely there in this condition. Though you'd think that the opposite thinking would be true - odds are that many women with the same symptoms can't all just be whiney hypochondriacs that the extreme critics want to make out. (Not that all the critics are extreme, I know.)
I have no idea why people would go into the field of medicine only to lose any sense of empathy. Actually the doctors that are jerks probably never had that, come to think of it.

I agree with Moosie ~~~~--~~~~ who cares what you call it, the symptoms are real and need to be treated. I know this sounds whackily out of place (so what's new around here), but I remember an episode of Golden Girls where Dorothy saw a million doctors and they all dismissed her as a whiny woman, until one diagnosed her with chronic fatigue syndrome.
It seems that more women then men are afflicted with diseases of this type, but the reality is probably that men are underreported because it's practically impossible to get one to go to a doctor ~~~~--~~~~ and the symptoms are things that men would think are too wussy (for lack of a better word) to complain about.
Having been through my own different brand of medical nightmare ~~~~--~~~~ my conclusion is that doctors no less than squat when it comes to treating anything but the most routine of matters (which to me, at this point, includes AIDS and cancer). If you have anything they can't classify, give you an aspirin for, or have to think about for more than your alloted 7 minutes of their time, forget about getting proper treatment.
The only reason my leg got any amount of proper attention was because it was 'of interest' to researchers and I had some guy who pioneered some procedure working on my leg for free. He was a complete asshole ~~~~--~~~~ he gave me a series of anesthetic injections prior to me going under and asked which hurt. When I said they all did he imperiously dismissed that as impossible ~~~~--~~~~ five hours of surgery later he realized it was, in fact, possible. That he came over to me and ~~~~--~~~~ I'm not kidding ~~~~--~~~~ pinched my cheek to make me feel better before getting knocked out was appalling. And this guy is apparently a top top something or other reconstructive plastic neurosurgeon.
The whole thing sucks if you have more than a cold. Sorry for the big rant. I'm in no mood, and I have a different but similar set of issues that I deal with on a daily basis.
Hope the new pills help you, dearie. - 2008-01-17 00:18:44

And I was so psyched that they'd actally find out something - so I was looking forward to more helpful press coverage. For intance one of the theories that some researchers are going by is that it's somehow related to a virus or related to the immune system.
And yes Shel - it seems completely academic - I mean, they still have people with symptoms to treat, either way. It's not like the symptoms are imaginary.
Heh, thanks Moosie. :) - 2008-01-16 17:05:51

Heh, I was wondering if someone with a December birthday would be able to let me know if this was common! I think I can definitely do the non Christmas colored wrapping paper thing - for me the hard part will be thinking up more than one present to give at one time!
Skatemom I would sooo LOVE to trade you birthday dates - I think I fit better as an October birthday more than a September one - and more bats and spooky items are around then anyhow! The orange color would get old though - but hey, it's a UT color too! - 2007-12-30 17:31:18

Oh I am SO glad someone else has this problem - and when my first space heater died I had to use a heating pad too, just to get the cat to stop complaining about my not turning the heater on! Cats just don't understand "no, I can't, it's broken!" - 2007-12-30 17:26:33

LOL!! We have a "misunderstanding" about our cat's heat source, too. My husband got her an electric heating pad, which we place under her pillow. Except the dog thinks it's for her and usurps it all the time. Occasionally I do, too...

Congratulations on becoming an auntie :) My birthday is also Dec 26 and you're spot on about the "multi-gift", I always detested it as a child. Your point about siblings who have birthdays at other times of the year hit the mark too. My paternal grandmother believed that 2 days worth of presents was too much for a child and used to send my birthday presents with my sister's...in March! I hated that so much. The other pet peeve, although it always made me feel selfish, was when people said they hadn't got me a gift just because it was a bad time of year, expensive etc, and that they'd get something "later". Of course the upside of being a Christmas baby is that there is always lots of good food, drink and parties around, you never have to go to school on your birthday and, depending on your job, you probably don't have to go to work either :D - 2007-12-28 17:59:39

congrats, Auntie Bat (which I suppose is better than being the batty Aunt...)! As someone who's birthday is a leeetle too close to Halloween, I can vouch for the importance of keeping the birthday separate from the other holiday, so definitely keep the wrapping separate and distinct. Enjoy the new family member! - 2007-12-27 21:10:53

Is that nomenclature right? A Multi-gift? I'd have called it a Co-Equivalent gift.

I did an update this morning ~~~~--~~~~ before we went to visit my dad in the hospital. He's feeling quite a bit more chipper. He'll probably be there until Friday, but at least they've started some treatment, etc. It appears to be not liver cancer, but esophageal cancer that has migrated to the liver. Not the best news, but we're waiting to find out a more complete prognosis. - 2007-12-25 14:34:02
