Elephants on Acid: And Other Bizarre Experiments
by Alex Boese

Really odd book about various "scientific" experiments, some gruesome, many just insane. Have't yet gotten to the elephants on acid part, but am definitely freaked out by the "let's decapitate an animal and try to keep just the head alive" chapter. Ugh.

Savage Beauty: The Life of Edna St. Vincent Millay
by Nancy Milford

I never read much of Millay before, but Milford wrote a really interesting biography of Zelda Fitzgerald, so I was interested to see her next book. Still in the first chapter, but the prolog was amusing in itself. I always appreciate reading the background of how the author started on the book.

Kitchen Confidential Updated Ed: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly
by Anthony Bourdain

I gave this to Jon as a gift a while back and only just recently remembered I never did borrow and read it myself. Am very amused so far. Sadly it's not the updated edition I've linked to - preface in our copy's dated Nov. 2000. Wonder what's been added/changed/corrected.

The New Kings of Nonfiction
by Ira Glass

Collection of nonfiction articles previously published in various magazines. Bought a while back in an airport and there are still a few articles I haven't finished reading. I really liked the Bill Buford article that became Among the Thugs.

I had no idea they have a plaque by the entrance - I'll have to make a another trip to check that out! Thanks for the information. And good to know that about the cemetery staff - sometimes it's hard to find a small grave in such a large place. A visit there is still on my list of Chandler stops to get around to visiting. - 2010-08-18 18:42:22

Just back from Raymond Chandler's home in LA Jolla, as in your photos. A nice plaque by the entrance. Also down to San Diego to see the grave. Very plain and simple like all the others with a bush nearby to help you find it. The staff there very helpful. - 2010-07-31 18:25:25

All of those teacups were my mother's, and Sharon and I always had big plans to sit together and drink tea in them as we relaxed and enjoyed our memories together. We've even done that a few times. Next time you're here the three of us will have to make time for our own "tea party"!

And thank you for sharing your photos of the trip. It's always fun for me to see the pictures you take because you see things that I have forgotten about or overlooked. - 2010-06-24 23:56:01

And it's so depressing to think that back in the 60s California's university system was the envy of the world. Even its K-12 system was pretty good, at least for the few years in which I was in it. - 2010-05-25 21:10:01

Heh, it's funny if I ever see an article about popcorn I must read it - and it never seems as much fun to go see a movie without getting popcorn. I'd say that at least 10 min (or more) of every movie we go see is us discussing what snacks they sell. (Er, we'd be chatting before the movie starts - we always go too early.) I still think it's weird that they seem to offer more and more food for sale. I always distrust the hot dogs, yeek.

I can remember going to a couple of movie theaters - the art house type you mentioned - that had gourmet popcorn. No clue if it was more healthy - but ooooh it was good stuff. Heck I'll still eat the not so good stuff - movie theater popcorn is addictive.

If I went to a convention giving away this kind of stuff? I would eat a little of everything, even the weird things, and end up feeling ill. Kinda like when we go to the fair and I have to try the fried twinkies. (ugh!) - 2010-05-10 16:08:28

Alan has worked in movie theatres most of his life, so I have heard a great deal about popcorn over the years. Since concessions make up the majority of a movie theatres income, there are whole conventions dedicated to popcorn, candy, and all kinds of new concession "innovations." We usually go to these things every year and come home with massive goody bags filled with every kind of junk food under the sun.

But, back to popcorn. There are actually many different kinds of popcorn kernels that range in price and in "fluffyness." So depending on how the theatre is run, you might get lush, fluffy, poofy popcorn...or, maybe not so much. The same goes with oil. When Alan was running a group of "art house" theatres, he insisted on getting the best corn and only using coconut oil. A lot of theatres will cheap out, but it can ding them in the long run because of slow sales.

Erf....I could go on and on, but that's probably more than you cared to know about theatre concessions. I know...I get tired of hearing about it too! - 2010-05-08 20:11:25

Heh, my furniture used to consist of two futons until not too many years ago! One for a bed and one for the living room that could be used as a sofa/foldout bed for guests. I remember telling my mom that I really didn't need a table and chairs because I usually ate while sitting on the sofa watching tv anyhow. Of course when she and dad came to visit I ended up getting a table and chairs! Oh and a coffee makers - as a non coffee drinker I always forget how serious coffee drinkers are about their morning cup! - 2010-05-03 20:37:56

My studio apt in Tucson in 1974 had a Murphy bed. Unfortunately the place had such limited floor space that it was "put the speakers and stereo cabinet on the floor and preclude pulling the bed out every night" or "use the bed." Guess which won.

Oh fer Heaven's sake: captcha word: futons (which is what I slept on in that apartment for a while.) - 2010-05-03 17:34:22

Hi Linkmeister! Well, we'll be on Maui next week for my grandmother's funeral but it'll be too short to even adjust to the time difference (4 days only). I'm not sure when we'll next be in Hawaii. My family moved to the West Coast in 2008, so we have no home base there anymore. - 2010-04-21 14:07:14

Ok the fact that there are more folk in costume walking around is just a tad bizarre. Though I suppose there are worse things than for tax day to become dress up in odd costumes day.

It does seem totally weird that Lady Liberty is played by dudes though. I'd imagine it's the kind of job where their friends would show up just to take photos of them dressed up like that. Or maybe that's just me, because I'm evil that way!

We have Liberty here, too. The dude in the costume gives me the creeps. He's always doing the two-gun-finger-point at me when I drive by. I know he's just trying to make a living in a silly costume...but it's unsettling. - 2010-04-15 19:15:31

Thanks for your photos of the Raymond Chandler home in La Jolla. I did a similar tour in San Francisco of Dashiel Hammett's haunts. OMG...60 takes?!! That's incredible. Just staging that thing once would be phenomenal. An amazing piece of work.

Dangit, I missed that Buzz Out Loud - do you remember the date?

And wow, I was sure there were more than one edit, just to fit it all in there - that's amazing.

I also watched it and thought - wow, that's a lot of heavy equipment, which means a lot of places crew could get hurt. A sledgehammer that falls by mistake for instance. Definitely a major undertaking. - 2010-03-08 18:59:52

209 - 324 - batgrl -

The BuzzOutLoud podcast interviewed the guy that did it. 60 takes, with three going the whole circuit in one take. But the video was edited, so as seen it's actually two takes. I got the impression that was to make the music sync better. But yes, other than that it's unedited.

The hardest part was the balls in the wood tracks, since their speed depended on the temperature and humidity.

All the TVs they went through are in the background. Along with several extras yet to be destroyed. - 2010-03-08 16:32:43

209 - 323 - jon -

That was so incredible. I can't imagine the amount of work that went into pulling that off. I have so many questions: how did they rehearse? how many TV's did they go through? how much stuff was destroyed until they got it right? etc.

And it appears to be done in one shot. Although, I was so entranced, I may have missed an edit here and there...or maybe all the edits for that matter. But still, it was seamless. Amazing. - 2010-03-05 02:29:38

Ok I had to look it up - I know the whole "better man than I, Gunga Din" and the story behind it - but totally forgot it was by Kipling. And yeah, I'll bet a lot of folk have no clue where the line comes from. But if you look at that link to Wikipedia, it is still being referenced in media - Hellboy (the comic) for instance. Suddenly I feel the need to buy comics - must resist...

I just wish there were more photos around of the house before renovation - not that it doesn't look wonderful - I'd just like to have a better idea of what it looked like when Chandler lived in it. Of course I'd also like the city to put up a plaque somewhere in the area about Chandler living there - I think it's something that should be better known. But then I'm a big fan of Chandler. - 2010-02-09 22:13:04

I totally have to recommend that camera app as the best time waster. If you're waiting in line, for a dr's appt, for anything - and you can quietly take photos and twiddle with them - this is a great thing to play with. Then again, I have a lot of apps like this that I snagged and put on my droid JUST for time wasting moments, such that I think I'm probably set for months of messing about.

I am SO glad I'm not the only one with the shutter thing - er, not that I'm wishing it on anyone, just started to wonder what the heck was up with it! And apparently lots of us have the shutter lag thing, so we're all waiting for the next software update. Wheee!

I'm also having problems holding the phone steady - but then I've had a hard time with holding heavier and lighter cameras steady, so I think that's just me. But ugh, camera shake PLUS the shutter lag, and yes, this camera leaves much to be desired. Then again, I must admit the phone still rocks, and even with its flaws the cameras much better than my last phone cam.

I like the way your coke can turned out. I think I have that app too, but I've never tried it. I'll have to check it out.

Also, Alan and I both have T-Mobile Android phones...and we have the same problem with the shutter lag. I also find it hard to hold the phone steady while trying to push the photo button. But maybe that's just me. Anyway, the camera is sort of the weak point on these phones, which is weird because I've had other camera phones that were wayyy better, yet the Android/Droid phones are supposed to be so sophisticated. - 2010-01-30 17:49:10

True, once the icons become easy wedged into the public brain, we're not going to look for a new invention of the desktop trashcan or anything like that. I did giggle a LOT over the System 7 bottom of the screen dock though - hmmm, where HAVE I seen that before?! Hee hee. Not exactly the same of course, but it made me think of another OS!

That said we've had zero problems with System 7 and our home network. For which I am tremendously thankful.

What a wonderful post, Batgrl, and what a fun Christmas and "techy" pre-holiday treat you had with your "baby". I'm glad your folks and their friends enjoyed Williamsburg. My Mother always wanted to go there, but never was able to make it.

We're fixing sausages, potato pancakes, and red cabbage for Morgan's birthday dinner today, and we'll fix a German dinner for you when you come up in January. Roz always fixes potato pancakes (or latkes) for her family (now numbering over 20) every Christmas! She takes one day before Christmas and cooks them all, freezes them (I think), and reheats them in the oven for dinner. For such a crowd that's the only way it can be done since just making them for four people takes a long time. I think I'll get her method from her to try for the dinner when you come up.

I use the red cabbage recipe from my old Luchof's cook book, and I make many packages and freeze it for the year. It's a very easy recipe, and something you could do with no trouble and surprise Jon some night...

Thanks for the pictures, I felt like we were celebrating with you! - 2009-12-26 13:48:53

I don't think Jon can hear his at night - I'm getting used to mine. And we no longer have the alert noise set as "DROID!" - so that helps! But you're right - these are our "babies" in a way - tho really, just clever toys. We don't have to send them to college, thankfully.

I figure we'll use the phone's cameras for those times when we feel we just have to share something immediately. Plus between our blogs, Flickr and Twitter it gives the family a way to check up on what we're up to - it's rare that we don't post something on one of those at least once a week.

We thought of you watching Boise over the weekend! I have to admit to not noticing any of the football games Jon had on as we were playing on the computers at the same time.

I know that we'll be posting photos of our food this week with you folk in mind - it wouldn't be Thanksgiving if we didn't share the menu! Jon and I had gotten a bit lazy in his past few Thanksgiving cooking fests - maybe he'll do the cooking thing in December this year. Meanwhile you and Sharon should take photos of your menus too, so we can all see what's on each others' tables! (We can have our own JanuaryFest holiday when we next meet up!)

We'll also send an email with attached photo of us all - and you do know that someday we'll do this by video phone. Because you just know that once videophone tech is available on cells that Jon is going to be trying that.

....Er wait...actually the droids DO take video...

Thanks, Batgrl

I enjoyed all of your pictures, and your comments actually made me feel that I had been on that trip with you, without all of the heat, walking, and "where are you now?" However, I did miss trying out the food... It all sounded good.

I thought the pictures with the Droid were good and actually quite similar until I saw the ones of the main dish you had. It's amazing the difference in that one where you can even see the little gratings of cheese with the Canon. It must be frustrating to try to figure out the focus and when it's going to take a picture~~~~;~~~~ your description of the droids as your "babies" must be accurate. If they really wake you up in the middle of the night, and you (and they) get frustrated trying to understand each other, then I see many similarities with the family two blocks away...

We had a great weekend (Friday and Saturday) with them. Because we were able to get first of the season fresh crab and huge bay salad shrimp, we took over dinner on Friday night. Raymond got home early, and we just feasted on crab, shrimp salad with homemade Louis dressing, Sourdough bread, and good wine. Then we watched Boise State beat up on Utah. Yesterday we had "Thanksgiving" dinner because we bought a fresh Orqanic turkey, and wanted to share it with them. Turket, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, greens, cranberry sauce, and pecan pie for dessert filled us up before we watched the Griz/Cat game on TV. We're having Tapas for the "real" Thanksgiving holiday. We'll be thinking of you together in New Orleans... - 2009-11-22 12:50:13

I lived with a filmmaker during the hey day of music videos. He was a small time guy, but fairly notorious in Seattle, where we lived at the time.

"Sometimes you got the feeling that the pre-production planning of some of the videos probably consisted of a few lines of description written on a bar napkin the night before the shoot. Sometimes you started to think that the video's director really was hoping to turn this into a full length film. Sometimes you really had no clue what was going on

You are spot on right there! I worked in all positions from pre~production to post. When it came time to editing, I just wanted to cut everything! But no, he had...in his mind...a story line. We had to fit *everything* in. OMG.

These were videos for local bands, but he wanted these to be epic films! He did eventually get one on MTV, but that was purely by chance.

He's still making unbelievably crappy short "art films." Thank God I split up with him years ago!

PS...Part of his motivation for making these films and music videos was to meet chics and get laid...also, the bands would pay big money to get a video. Yes, he admitted as much. But that was a great motivator for the content of the videos. Often, the most homely women would be the star, but that's because she was "putting out." - 2009-11-15 18:44:36

Mike Post has written about a zillion themes for TV, but none better than the one he wrote for Hill Street. That single piano melody was a killer.

I don't begrudge Pete Townsend and The Who for selling "Who Are You," "Won't Get Fooled Again," and "Baba O'Riley" to CSI, but original theme music adds something to the shows, I think. - 2009-10-23 02:28:30

I'll be pleased to own it as long as it doesn't start speaking to us in a ghostly voice and making predictions about the future. The ones in this Texas yard were specially built by local artist Dog Hill and his assistants, Jose Navarro and Jesus Contreras. As far as what's available in your area I'd Google for a place where you can purchase the materials to build something out of fiberglass - and from there ask the store's owner if they can recommend anyone. Another place where you can bump into people who create fiberglass statues - shops that use the material in car repair. In any case, it usually doesn't hurt to call to see if they have any suggestions. Because if you want something like this, depending on where you live, you may have to find a local artist first and then commission them to build it.

Good luck! - 2009-10-06 17:15:51

1. Yes! Want! But! Price + limited amount...so nah. Would love At least a print to frame, or a book.
2. We also watch Bourdain's show way too much. I'd say our tv is on Food Network, Travel Channel, or Something Football most of the time these days.
3. Sandra is eeeeeeverywhere.
4. Williams is apparently enjoying his time of the radar to do music when he wants to and look into the whole ET thing. Sounded pretty believable to me - though the photo of him in a beard didn't look real at all - but then I've noticed beards are odd like that, you never can tell what a guy'll end up growing. Apparently when my dad tried to grow ones ages ago it was reddish or something, and much giggling from my mom.
5. I have SO been meaning to ask you about that - I bumped into it on Flickr and was interested - thank goodness for Wikipedia and its instant answers or I'd never have understood why I kept finding multiple names for where the statue was located! - 2009-10-05 13:15:32

Oh I never worry about celebrating my birthday if it falls during the week - it's always been easier on everyone if we do something the weekend after it falls. So we're going to the great Mexican market we found and are going to get one of the lovely looking cakes we kept seeing people buying. I figure it's a good excuse to try them out - and if it doesn't taste wonderful we can at least take some fun photos!

And I really loved the flowers - email to follow! - 2009-09-24 18:12:49

157 - 284 - batgrl -

Did you do anything fun for your big day?... Although I'm sure nothing could beat the fun, leaky ball... Has the bouquet held up? I had a friend who always celebrated birthdays by her birthday week and birthday month! - 2009-09-24 10:20:54

That sounds like so much fun! I think our only worry would be getting water on the cameras - because I know we'd both really want to take photos! I did go look at youtube and found a few people who'd posted their travel video - so I got a peek at what it's like in the tunnel under the falls - that I'd HAVE to go see.

I think we'll definitely put this on our Hope To See Someday list. - 2009-09-20 06:04:30

You really should go to Niagra. My visit there in 1976 was one of the MOST fun things I have ever done. We did everything: a couple of different boat rides...one right up close to the Falls where everybody got soaked...don't worry...they gave us yellow Macs and rubber boots first. But that part was strange because at the entrance to the "dressing room" the staff said, "Men to the right, women to the left". We were just putting on boots and raincoats for heaven's sake. Then there was another boat ride further down the river from the Falls. We saw all the different displays about people who had gone over the Falls and some replicas of their barrels and other devices...and I think one actual steel barrel like thing that survived the fall. We went into the tunnels underneath the Falls...walked and walked until we came to a lookout where we could see we were under the Falls looking out through the water. Then there's a walkway with different levels of stairs that goes along the side and up above the Falls with a lookout there. There was so much to do...we stayed all day and enjoyed every second. This is all on the Canadian side of the Falls. The American side is just sort of seedy and not very interesting. We spent at least two hours walking along the parkways beside the Falls and just standing and looking at them. As you stand there, you can feel the rumble and power of all the water. It literally shakes you. There are no words for how it makes you feel. Exhilarated and awe struck are meager ways to explain it. And then there are all those great negative ions blowing all over you making you feel absolutely wonderful. We went back after dark because the Falls are lighted then, and again the sight is just incredible. There's a lot of touristy junk shops around, but we didn't go into those. In face, with the Falls right there and so mesmerizing, I can't imagaine anyone taking the time to go into them. It's not close to home, but for some of the best fun you've ever had it is well worth the trip. It really was one of the highlights of my life. - 2009-09-13 16:48:42

I really think that the home owner was either cleaning or getting ready to use all of those piles for something because the rest of the house and yard was incredibly neat and well kept. One of those "I'd love to know the story here" types of places.

I'm really bad at the pack rat thing myself - so lately I'm working on either throwing stuff out or making collages out of things. Eventually I'll probably end up taking photos of it all. Hopefully! - 2009-09-13 13:49:34

153 - 278 - batgrl -

I actually really like your balloon photo. It has an artistic starkness to it.

And the neatly laid out chains in your last photo of the junk house are sand ladders, I think. They're used when driving in sandy places (deserts, sand dunes), so that if you get stuck, you can lay them out and drive on them to get traction. They are usually attached with a tow line to the vehicle, so you don't have to run all the way back and retrieve them after you get unstuck.

Great junk house. I love things like that too. I'm about thisclose to becoming a pack rat like that myself! - 2009-09-12 17:48:27

Yes! I can remember it making me crazy when Holmes would hint at those cases that Watson wasn't going to write up. There's also one about how far the parsley sank into the melting butter or something.

It also bothered me that Lewis Carroll never finished the joke "why is a raven like a writing desk?" I mean, I get that it had no answer, but it still stuck in my head.

If you Google "Giant Rat of Sumatra" you'll be astonished at the number of times that New Guinea find is described that way.

Zillions of closet Sherlock Holmes fans are coming out of the woodwork admitting they'd always wanted to read that story, the one "the world is not yet ready to hear." - 2009-09-09 03:28:48

We're only in San An a few more days - but keep an eye on Jon's twitter page because he's the one keeping up with places we're going (and what we're eating). Well, a little bit anyway. As he remembers. - 2009-09-05 22:30:43

Hi! Stumbled across the blog post in a Google Maps-fueled quest to see the remodled home. In his letters, Chandler mentioned that photographers wept openly upon seeing the view of the ocean from his window.

Hey, where'd my comment go?

I had hard plastic ones (not gas-permeable, it was too early for those) in 67-68. They were tinted gray, which was fine with hazel eyes, until I lost one in a Sears parking lot.

Found it, about an hour and a half later.

I went to high school with a girl who'd gotten hers in Germany about four years earlier (so, 1963 or thereabouts)~~~~;~~~~ they were the kind that covered the entire eyeball and had an area at the front ground to prescription strength. They were grotesque to look at, but they apparently worked for Peggy. - 2009-08-23 02:46:43

My mom always wore hard contacts then had lasix. It weirds me out to see my mom wandering around with reading glasses on top of her head. She never needed them before the surgery so I don't get why she had the procedure done.

Weird childhood story: My mom always had an extra pair of contacts in the medicine cabinet. When soft contacts first came out, there was that commercial with the lady squeezing the contact between her forefinger and thumb. You see where this is going....... yes, I ran to the bathroom to try that on my mom's spare. Snap! Right in two. I put it back in the case and never mentioned it. Two days later she lost one and needed a spare. Of course it was the same as the one I'd broken. Big trouble for me! - 2009-08-21 20:08:35

Sounds scrumptious. I sent it off to the mister and the mum with the title of "Batgrl's Great-Gramma's Pound Cake".

I was SO amused by the artwork! And the curtains I admit have totally grown on me. I'd love to have a chair or at least throw pillows in that pattern. - 2009-08-06 00:00:02

the floor designs at DFW at the SkyTrain lobby areas are also pretty impressive. I didn't notice them until late one night while waiting for the by-then one-way train ride around the airport to my car. You don't really get the whole picture at once unless you notice the little photos on the wall with the aerial view ~~~~--~~~~ then they make more sense. Now I love to see them on the way to find my car. - 2009-07-23 08:16:45

It's actually a really nice museum. The price of admission gets you a set of headphones and an mp3 player (that you have to give back) which gives you audio telling you what you're seeing and interviews to listen to. I actually had to skip over some of them simply because it was taking so long, and we had more photos to run take that day. - 2009-07-13 18:04:05

Lightning is really, really hard to catch. Not to mention the whole "ack all this moisture is going to ruin my camera" worries. Oddly we seem to rarely have lightning and thunder in southern California - I do sort of miss it, even though I really got my fill when I lived in the south. - 2009-07-13 18:01:35

I didn't remember the Midway being turned into a museum. I toured it once when it was homeported in Yokosuka (carriers used to give ship's tours to family and anyone else who wanted to come aboard~~~~;~~~~ since it was unlikely I'd be stationed on a carrier in my two years of active duty I thought I'd go see what it was like). - 2009-07-09 03:13:57

Beautiful shots of the fireworks.

Talking about reflexes, I remember standing on the side of a two-lane road in New Mexico watching a desert thunderstorm~~~~;~~~~ I must have stood there for twenty minutes trying to capture lightning flashes. Never did. - 2009-07-09 03:10:09

Ah see, now that I know it's a Zombie Love Story I like the shirt even better!

Maybe next year we should all get those hats and do a group photo. I think the Monty Python Bruce sketch used similar brown hats, only they had corks hanging from them. Always meant to look up why - I think they're supposed to discourage mosquitoes or something. Or just look funny. - 2009-07-06 00:11:07

Great shots!! You did really capture the feeling of the event. Thanks for posting them.

Oh, the story behind Rob's shirt is that it is a zombie love story. I couldn't quite follow it from the beginning but apparently the zombie chick at the top bites many people turning them into zombies until a guy near the bottom is bitten and turned into a zombie... he then meets the zombie chick in the last illustration and falls in love.... ahh... happy endings ~~~~;~~~~)

Not much of a story on my hat on Lisa... she just tends to wear it each year... and yes... it does look good on her :) - 2009-06-29 12:12:27

Nope, I give full credit to Sharon - both from her choices of flowers in her yard and from her showing me various ways to arrange the plants the first year I came to visit! Some of them I'd never have thought to pick if she hadn't pointed them out. - 2009-06-24 17:48:34

Oh always feel free to pass on links to whoever you want to! I just wish I had more good people photos - I took about 300 photos in all, but that doesn't mean that they were all good enough to share. Batty, With your photos AND commentary you have really captured the weekend. Now my sister, among others, can feel as if they were a part of it even if they were unable to attend. If it's OK with you, I'll send a link to these pages to her and others who might be interested. - 2009-06-24 16:04:44

Thanks, Batty!

You have captured some great photos of the "whirlwind" at the '09 Solstice Gathering... I'll have to see if my camera has that "sports and action" setting you mentioned. Congratulations for being the first to post photos! And thanks for the link to last year's festivities for comparison purposes.

It was so good to be able to spend time with you again~~~~;~~~~ I like the idea of being together twice a year. Maybe we can be together (at least every other year) for Christmas or Thanksgiving, too... - 2009-06-24 15:56:38

Ok so apparently the flowers aren't jasmine - though I was sure that's what they were because they smell just like them. The yellowy blooming trees I never did get a closer/better shot of - all of them were in the distance. I'll be trying to either hunt them down or search Flickr some more. Next time I'll pester Jon to use his fancy zoom to get me a better shot! (This didn't even occur to me at the time, silly me.)

I now have to watch the street sign dudes again. Just because you mentioned the "glass feet" sound, and that made me have to watch again! Makes me curious as to what the audio tech used for that noise, sounds so familiar! - 2009-06-03 02:48:26

Oh and why am I not surprised! Heh. - 2009-05-30 19:57:34

The white flowers are jasmine. The trees with the yellow seedy things look like Tree-of-heaven but I can't really tell even in the larger size. The detail is blurred. And the fighting streetwalk signs was fun. Definitely liked the sound of them moving, like tiny glass feet. - 2009-05-29 08:37:51

You were totally right about the seeds all over - I've now read multiple "this is messy!" blurbs about this tree! In other words - I'm going to love seeing these in other peoples' yards, not mine!
If the seeds are what I think then they look pretty weird too. - 2009-05-26 23:00:17
